Dexter Gordon is no stranger to Jazz fans around the globe. His strong, clear tone personified the tenor saxophone for decades, and although the man is no longer with us, the melody lingers on. This particular recording has found the right home at SRI Jazz, for truly it is a classic.
Recorded in November 1976 at the world famous Jazz Workshop in Chicago this package spotlights Dexter at his best. Teamed up with the sensitive lyrical trumpet of Joe Newman the maestro swings, thrills and soothes from the opening “Tangerine”, a romping rendition, sharing solos with the entire entourage, through an incomparable version of “Body and Soul”, a mood changing “Ode to Billie Jo” featuring the sexy trumpet of Newman, the ensemble of “Softly”, a tear-jerking “Shadow” and a gutsy swinging extended version of “Walkin'”, this recording highlights the versatility of a true Jazz Master.
