Ray Brown Jr.’s “road warrior” mentality sprang from watching his folks practicing their own fierce work ethic throughout a seemingly endless series of tours, recording dates and film, television and radio appearances. He applied that drive to his unbridled desire to perform—with various bands and as a solo act. He hit the concert trail with relentless abandon. Ray is the son of Ella Fitzgerald and bassist Ray Brown. His mom was arguably the finest female jazz singer of all time while his father, a jazz giant, played with Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Bud Powell and Oscar Peterson.

In a time when young music artists expect to become instant stars, Ray Brown Jr. is like a duck out of water. Ray has an old fashioned work ethic and as such is a throwback to the days of when his Mom and Dad first started out and struggled to survive. It might just be that Ray learned it all traveling with his Mom during his summer school breaks when she toured from the west coast to the east coast and then traveled back to the west coast with his Dad. These two giants of Jazz worked hard at their craft and loved every minute of it but never took their success for granted. So I guess we can say that Ray is a ‘chip off the old block’.

“The Best of Ray Brown Jr.” follows the critically acclaimed “Friends And Family” album, an album of all duets, which has been very popular on radio as well as with fans and critics. This is a collection of both fan favorites and that of us at SRI Jazz. This album belongs in every jazz lover’s music collection. We hope that you enjoy it as much as we do. So sit back, relax, turn up the volume and listen to “The Best of Ray Brown Jr.“
