June Christy is known for her work in the cool jazz genre and for her silky smooth vocals.

In 1945, after hearing that Anita O’Day had left Stan Kenton’s Orchestra, June Christy auditioned and became his vocalist. She was the voice of such hits as “Shoo Fly Pie and Apple Pan Dowdy,” “Tampico” and “How High the Moon”.

In 1954, she went solo and released Something Cool, recorded with Pete Rugolo and a gathering of notable jazz musicians including her husband, multi-instrumentalist Bob Cooper and alto saxophonist Bud Shank. Something Cool was re-released in 1955 with additional selections, and then rerecorded in stereo in 1960 with different personnel.  Something Cool was also important in launching the vocal cool movement of the 1950s, and it hit the Top 20 Charts, as did her third album, The Misty Miss Christy.  After her death, she was hailed as “one of the finest and most neglected singers of her time.”

The songbird of the Stan Kenton Band is recorded here with her own touring band. On this terrific album, there are wonderful renditions of some of June’s biggest hits plus some other favorites.

The title is deceiving as this is NOT a live album but a recording of June with her concert band. A great addition to anyone’s music collection.

This is June Christy – “In Concert”.
